Premiere – 25th April, 2024

The show follows the efforts of patients at Charenton Asylum to perform a musical play written by Marquis de Sade about an event fifteen years earlier – the murder of Jean-Paul Marat during the French Revolution. The patients at the asylum accomplish this with varying degrees of success; because some of the text of the play is censored by the asylum’s management, various misunderstandings arise between the actors in the course of the performance related to their set diagnoses, and the performance of the production is frequently interrupted by the disorderly patients, the director of the asylum and the playwright, de Sade himself.

“Marat/Sade” is at once a deeply intellectual and animalistic sensory play that tackles questions about the need for a revolution and whether social change should begin with society or the individual.
