In 1940 and 1941, the government of Latvia was deposed, and power changed hands. A Latvian guy Matīss from Torņakalns, who does not wish to join any army, tries to maintain his neutrality. Of course, he fails. The need to survive behind the lines, indulging oneself and the sale of illicit goods, meeting the first love, betrayal, evil, kindness and the taste of lead in his mouth. Both from a stray bullet and from the fate of Latvia.
This novel by Māris Bērziņš, published as part of the series ‘LATVIA. The 20th century’ became the topic of heated discussions immediately after its release. Now, you can also watch its adapted version at the Latvian National Theatre. Adventure and escapade on the one hand, and a series of tragicomic events that transform people’s lives on the other.
