May 2002. Less than a year after 9/11, the world no longer believes in certainty, security and stability. Fuel prices are on the rise. The charismatic Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga is our president. Marija Naumova wins Eurovision. There are heated discussions about joining the EU. And the National Theatre is preparing for extensive renovations. Shortly before the move to the VEF centre, the last performances of ‘The Sphynx’ by Jānis Lūsens and Māra Zālīte take place. While the audience is enchanted by Ivars Stonins’ baritone, young, lost and love-smitten cloak attendants wait for the performance to end. Fatalistic and romantic comedy about mysterious divinations, seeing the pyramids and the thick fog that has always covered our individual and global future.
